The Garhwal region of north India has a huge treasure box that contains some of the holiest of Hindu pilgrimage sites and Rishikesh is one such major attractions.Rishikesh derived from the word Hrishikesh,literally means Lord of the Senses, stands for Lord Vishnu and the city is blessed with the flowing of Holy Ganges.Rishikesh, a most tranquil place in northern Uttar Pradesh, is situated on the foothills of the Himalayas, this holy city on the banks of the River Ganga along the river, the area is filled with thick green forests in the all-mountainous region. It is the gateway to the upper Garhwal region and the starting point for the Char Dham pilgrimage to Badrinath,Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The city is close to Haridwar, increasing the spiritual sense manifolds. There are numerous ancient or newly constructedshrines , ashrams ,shops selling literature and religious items lining the river ghats and roads along with enriching and unique traditional and cultural performances,exotic cuisine etc.It is a destination which is washed by the sanctimonious waters of the Ganges, and encompassed by the rugged terrains of the Himalayas. Rishikesh is the perfect base camp for exploring the majesty of the mountains and conquering the torrents of the river.
